About Tamar Berk

Tamar Berk is a local musician and painter in the San Diego area.Tamar graduated with a degree in photography with a fine art focus from Kent State University. She began illustrating surrealistic scenes during her college years and while going to school abroad. These were mostly black and white pen illustrations in which she created strange worlds and characters. As she developed her style, she moved to gouache on canvas and became fascinated with Pareidolia which is the mind's tendency to perceive a specific, often meaningful image in a random or ambiguous visual pattern. She found herself pulling influences from the human body and its symbiotic relationships. As an artist and musician, Berk's creativity knows no bounds. Her artistic evolution began in the abstract style, where she skillfully blended colors and shapes to create thought-provoking compositions. However, it was her fascination with pareidolia that sparked a new chapter in her artistry. Through her work, she delves into the intriguing phenomenon of perceiving familiar shapes in abstract patterns, creating a sense of wonder and intrigue. She was also influenced by her memories of the whimsical images from her childhood reading Dr. Suess and her fascination with a small Salvador Dali book she received from her father at a young age.    

I've always been intrigued with Pareidolia which is the mind's tendency to perceive a specific, often meaningful image in a random or ambiguous visual pattern. I am also fascinated with the human body and its symbiotic relationships within it. I paint using bold and bright gouache on canvas to convey how everything in our world is alive with energy celebrating color and defying the monotone trends in design. I'm also interested in how atoms vibrate even in solid objects and can be affected by things around them. Thus, nothing is solid and there is energy and waveforms moving between all objects in the universe.
